Barry Prophet Writing

From 1977 to 1983 Barry Prophet published 12 artist books combining poetic and graphic text and images written in various personae exploiting copy art and binding techniques. Books were a range of sizes, 4in.x3.5in. to 8.5inx11in. and lengths, 8 to 50 pages. Glass Suit Press & Rumour Publications.

Barry's long standing interests in music and poetry led him to contribute musical & poetic improvisations in the multi media group Test Patterns: Inventions in Aural Space at A Space & University of Ottawa and solo works at the Music Gallery 1978-79.

From 1979 – 1981, Necessary Angel Theatre Company commissioned Barry to write several theatrical offerings including an adaptation of Sophocles’ Electra (This Barry Prophet adaptation is striking...the story is pared down without losing any of its emotional and mythical power. Toronto Globe & Mail 1979) for which Barry also composed and performed the percussion accompaniment.

Dwellings & Incursions: Natural Selection & Community the Artist’s Photographic Book & Sound Art CD project received research and development support from the Multi-Arts section of the Ontario Arts Council 2008.

August 7-30, 2009. Dwellings and Incursions: Natural Selection & Community at Lawrence House Centre for the Arts, Sarnia. Integrated & media arts installation, opening performance and residency.

Dwellings & Incursions: Photographs by Barry Prophet opened May 1, 2012 at Roastery Coffee House 401 Richmond St.W. Toronto. The exhibition of 24 photographs was part of Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival 2012 and was displayed until July 31.
