Barry Prophet Music Education
Barry
Prophet teaches and performs throughout Canada. Projects include a
residency for members of the Heiltsuk Nation, Bella Bella, B.C. and Patterns in the Park arts intensive at the Toronto Urban Studies
Centre and the Canadian Opera Company’s Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera
Centre, Toronto.
Barry Prophet taught Experimental Percussion at AISP/Avondale Alternative School Toronto from 1984 to 2001.
Barry
has received numerous Ontario Arts Council Arts Education grants for teaching in the
schools, has been a guest educator at York University, Nipissing
College, McMaster University and the Ontario Arts Education Institute.
Barry
was a composer for the National Ballet’s Creating Dances In the
Schools project, created and coordinated Inventors & Innovators,
an education workshop series focusing on new music, March 1995, and was
the education coordinator for The Body Electric Festival, Sept/Oct
1997.
Barry founded the Music Gallery Institute, the Music
Gallery’s Alternative Community Music Education Program for Children,
Families & Adults (2001-2004).
Barry taught and performed at the Algoma Traditional Dance & Music Camp, St. Joseph Island, August 2006 & 07.
Sound Art Education
Barry
was education co-ordinator for soundaXis, a festival of New Music,
Acoustics and Architecture from January 2005 to June 2006. Barry created
and led the project Building Music, in which students made slide shows
of architecture and environmental music presented on line and at the
festival June 1-11. This project was in partnership with Toronto Urban
Studies Centre and Dragon Academy.
Barry taught Sound Art to gr.
7 & 8 students at Archie Stouffer Elementary School Minden ON in
conjunction with Barry's integrated arts installation Dwellings and
Incursions at Rail's End Gallery (Haliburtion, ON) Fall 2006.
Barry has received an Artist in Education grant from the Ontario Arts Council from September 2013- December 31, 2014. He is offering Sound Art programs to a wide range of grades.
Visual Art Education
Barry has taught visual art programs including chime sculpture, mask making, instrument making, sound sculpture & print making to Elementary & High school age students at programs though-out Ontario including North York Summer Studio, Pegasus Dance Studios Toronto, Allenby College Oakville, Avondale Alternative School Toronto & Marathon High School.
